Sumter Scholarship to Benefit Sumter High School Nursing Students

Sumter, S.C. – The Central Carolina Technical College Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of a new scholarship in honor of Ms. Thelma Sumter and in memory of Ms. Mary F. Sumter.

The Thelma and Mary F. Sumter Aspiring Nursing Scholarship has been established by the Sumter Family Charitable Foundation Inc. through the Central Carolina Technical College Foundation Scholarship Program in honor of their mother and grandmother’s dedication to the nursing field. Thelma is a retired nurse of 30 years, a graduate of the Central Carolina Technical College nursing program, and the mother of Mary F. Sumter. Mary was an aspiring nurse with a passion for healthcare, education, family and helping others.

“We are committed to investing in future healthcare professionals,” says Dr. Jeffery Sumter a representative of the Sumter Family Charitable Foundation. “We believe that philanthropy honors the sacrifices and contributions of our loved ones.”
The scholarship is intended for a Sumter High School graduate pursuing a career in nursing at Central Carolina Technical College.
The CCTC Foundation administers more than 100 scholarships per academic year for the betterment of students in Clarendon, Lee, Kershaw and Sumter counties. Each scholarship fund at the CCTC Foundation has its own unique criteria. Depending on the fund, some criteria are specific, while others are general enough to benefit a large group of students.

“These scholarships are funded by businesses, community organizations and private donors across Clarendon, Lee, Kershaw and Sumter counties,” said Misty Hatfield, CCTC vice president of institutional advancement. “The Foundation is honored to have been chosen to be part of this recognition for Thelma and Mary F. Sumter.”

CCTC Foundation awards more than $115,000 in scholarships

Sumter, S.C. – The Central Carolina Technical College Foundation awarded 143 scholarships to students totaling more than $115,000 for the 2020-2021 academic year.
These funds assist students with education-related costs such as tuition, fees, books, classroom and lab supplies.

“The Foundation is only able to make these scholarships available to our students because of the generosity of our community partners,” said Misty Hatfield, executive director of Institutional Advancement. “In many cases, a scholarship makes the difference for a student that allows them to stay in college, and ultimately, to reach their career goals.”

Thanks to the support from Foundation donors, CCTC students were able to continue their education even during a worldwide pandemic. “The Foundation’s investment in area students is a continuation of our shared mission to support higher education in Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee and Sumter,” Hatfield added.

The CCTC Foundation promotes the cause of higher education and expanded educational opportunities to Central Carolina students. The Foundation strives to create scholarships and endowments and assist with other college-related expenses.
